Based on the classical Greek mythological tale of Ariadne, Theseus, and the Minotaur, Ariadne by Jennifer Saint is a story of betrayal, sacrifice, and overcoming obstacles. It follows Ariadne, the young Cretan princess daughter of Minos throughout the story of Theseus and the Minotaur, except it is from her perspective. We see what happens to her before Theseus shows up in Crete, and what happens to her following the end of the story of Ariadne and Theseus. It is a fascinating story told from a perspective not usually written: hers. This book contains mature themes typical of mythological stories, including assault, attempted murder, war, suicide, death, cults, bestiality (the Minotaur), and other mature themes. For that reason, I would recommend this book to teenage audiences and older. Readers who enjoy retellings of Greek mythology, such as Circe by Madeline Miller, are likely to enjoy this novel as well.
