A thrilling novel in a world of magic, danger, and sin, Jester by Brielle D. Porter illustrates the choice between fame and what’s right. Lisette is disgraced following the execution of her father for assassinating the King. Lisette, a performer, never gets to inherit his magic as a result, meaning she has to use common magic tricks to perform rather than genuine magic, which her greatest rival, Luc, has access to. When offered the chance, she enters a deadly competition to become the Queen’s Jester. However, more details of the King’s murder come to light, and Lisette is forced to make choices between family and fame. I’d recommend this book for ages 12+, as it contains references to murder, poison, magic, executions, violence, threats, and death. Readers who enjoyed The Hunger Games and The Selection might enjoy this book, as it has similar themes and ideas.
